LAUNCH Program: Week 2 Recap

LAUNCH Interns

Caitlyn

Over this past week, we were able to do a variety of things such as chat with journalist  Mr. Derek Wallbank, start up a new #summeratICS social media series, and edit photos for the ICS website.

Something I will take away for the future was the opportunity to have an interview with the Senior Editor at Bloomberg to discuss his journey to success and certain strategies to the profession of journalism. The discussion with Mr. Wallbank was insightful as he also covered the marketing side of journalism––the importance of statistical evidence to keep people accountable and informed. It has allowed me to discover the world of journalism and expand my view of media in general.

One particular thing that stood out to me this week was taking photos and interviewing staff members who work over the summer. I feel so grateful for the hard work that is done for ICS, even during the holidays. Getting to interview the maintenance crew in particular was valuable as I don’t get the chance to speak to them frequently; it has been a blessing in itself. It has reminded me of all the dedication that every staff member puts into ensuring our safety and wellbeing for the upcoming school year.

This week was definitely busier than the last, but it felt good to be productive and contribute our time and effort to the school. One of the projects we recently launched was our #summeratICS series on social media, which showcases the hard work that our staff does in preparation for our reopening in August. Personally, I enjoy working on this initiative the most as we are able to highlight the passionate and dedicated members of our community who often don’t get the recognition they deserve. We were able to interview them about their duties throughout the year as well as the reason they love working at ICS. It was heartwarming to hear that they all truly value their work environment and that they do their best to enrich the lives of the students.

Another part of the week that stood out to me was our virtual chat with Mr. Derek Wallbank, a Senior Editor at Bloomberg. As an aspiring journalist myself, I found our talk both insightful and stimulating. What I admired the most was his genuine passion for what he does. He said that what gets him up in the morning is his ability to make an impact on the world based on his writing. In his words, the people in his industry have a big responsibility as their work ultimately shapes the narrative of our world as it is today, so they cannot afford to publish inaccurate or unreliable information.

Overall, the LAUNCH program has made me value the ICS community even more, and it has also made me look forward to the work experiences I will gain in the future.

Week two was a lot more hectic than the first, considering the sudden workload! I worked on sorting out photos and thinking up design elements, which was a fun learning experience. Watching all the action from “behind the scenes” allowed me to understand more of what it takes to run a school and think about how to catch the attention of an audience. It has also been a very insightful experience to manage my time and be more disciplined when it comes to deliverables.

Speaking of insight, we were able to gain a perspective on marketing from journalist Mr. Derek Wallbank. He gave great advice when it came to marketing, as well as handling rejection from jobs in the future. It was a great experience listening and learning from an expert. Seeing the passion and joy that he gets from his line of work inspires me to be as passionate about what I do.

The experience so far has been eye-opening. Learning from experts and watching everything from the inside for the first time gave me an idea of exactly how important the marketing aspect of the business is. It’s not at all easy to do work like this, but it shows how passionate and caring the staff are to do this regularly.
