ICS Partners with the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth

Jennifer Carlson

At ICS, we are committed to providing enriching learning experiences that challenge and support our learners. This year, we partnered with the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) to offer two academically advanced courses for our elementary students in Grades 3-5: Household Chemistry and the Young Reader’s Series. These specialized courses have given our students exciting opportunities to explore science and literature in new and engaging ways while connecting with expert instructors and students from around the world.

With Mrs. Liu leading the way, ICS is proud to bring CTY courses to our advanced learners, providing them with world-class educational opportunities that foster curiosity, problem-solving, and a passion for discovery.

Hands-On Science: Household Chemistry (Completed)

Earlier this year, our young scientists dove into the fascinating world of chemistry through CTY’s Household Chemistry course. This hands-on, experiment-intensive program helped our advanced learners explore how chemistry shapes everyday life, from the kitchen to the world around them.

ICS students explored:

  • States of matter and different types of mixtures
  • How to identify physical vs. chemical changes
  • The role of enzymes, food fermentation, and preservation
  • The science of colors, polymers, and biological molecules

Throughout the course, students conducted 12 hands-on experiments using common household items, tested the properties of acids and bases, and even experimented with endothermic reactions while baking bread. They wrapped up their learning with a final project, where they created a floorplan or video showcasing the many ways chemistry is used in daily life.

Young Reader’s Series: A Personalized Literary Journey (Ongoing)

Launched in January, CTY’s Young Reader’s Series offers our advanced learners the opportunity to explore literature in a way that aligns with their unique interests. Each student selected a book series or theme to study, allowing for an engaging and personalized experience.

ICS students are discovering:

  • Thought-provoking themes through in-depth literary analysis
  • Critical reading and discussion skills through guided assignments
  • Connections between literature and real-world topics

Through interactive discussions and engaging coursework, students are refining their reading comprehension, critical thinking, and analytical abilities while exploring stories that resonate with them.

We’re excited to continue offering enriching opportunities like these for our students in the future!
